The perfect beginner project: The baby blanket
A Very Special Knitted Item
A hand-knitted baby blanket is something truly special. It accompanies the baby through its first months, keeps it warm in the stroller, perhaps later becomes a comfort blanket, and often remains a cherished keepsake for a long time. And the best part: a baby blanket is a wonderful project to knit even if you don't have much experience yet.
Due to its simple square or rectangular shape, a baby blanket usually requires no complicated increases or decreases. You can fully concentrate on the stitches, try out a new pattern, or simply enjoy knitting row after row in a relaxed way.
Here you'll find tips on suitable patterns, sizes, and yarns – and a simple, free basic pattern for your own baby blanket.
Knitting a baby blanket – a beautiful project for beginners
If you're just starting out with knitting, a baby blanket is an ideal larger project. Unlike sweaters, jackets, or hats, you don't have to worry about fit or complicated constructions.
Especially suitable for beginners are:
- garter stitch – you knit only knit stitches
- stockinette stitch – knit stitches on the right side, purl stitches on the wrong side
- moss stitch – a nice way to practice knit and purl stitches
- simple textured patterns – for a bit more variety in the knitting pattern
The many repetitions will quickly help you get into a routine. A pattern that initially required concentrated counting will often become second nature after a few rows.
And a baby blanket doesn't have to be complicated at all: simple patterns, especially when combined with beautiful yarn, often look particularly high-quality and timeless.
Modern baby blankets: calm, timeless, and yet special
Pink or light blue are long no longer the only options for a baby blanket. Today, natural, subtle shades that can be easily combined with different furnishings and nurseries are particularly appealing.
Popular choices include:
- Beige, cream, and warm brown tones
- Sage and other muted green tones
- Sand, taupe, and grey
- Soft pastel colours
- Calm colour gradients
Of course, a baby blanket can just as well be colourful. If you're giving the blanket as a gift, it's worth asking the expectant parents about their taste beforehand. This way, you'll create a gift that truly suits them.
Different colours within a single blanket can also look very modern – for example, as wide stripes, narrow block stripes, or with a different coloured border.
What size should a baby blanket be?
The ideal size depends primarily on what the blanket is intended for. A compact blanket for the stroller needs different dimensions than a generously sized crawling or snuggling blanket.
If you want the blanket to be used for as long as possible, you can plan for it to be a bit larger.
Important: For unsupervised sleep of babies in their first year of life, a sleeping bag is recommended instead of a loose blanket. A hand-knitted baby blanket is wonderful for snuggling, for the stroller, or as a mat – with small babies, always preferably under supervision.

Which wool is suitable for a baby blanket?
When choosing wool, more than just colour and appearance matter. The yarn comes into direct contact with delicate baby skin and should therefore above all be pleasantly soft, skin-friendly, and as easy to care for as possible.
Also, make sure the yarn sheds as little as possible and that the finished blanket retains its shape even after frequent use.
Merino wool for a warm baby blanket
Fine merino wool is a beautiful choice for autumn and winter babies. It feels pleasantly soft, provides warmth, and usually results in a very even stitch pattern.
Especially for finer patterns and classic knitted blankets, merino wool is therefore very popular.
Cotton for warmer days
Cotton and cotton blends are particularly interesting for spring and summer. They feel pleasant on the skin and are often easy to wash.
Even if you want to knit a rather light baby blanket, it's worth taking a look at cotton yarns.
Easy-care baby yarns
A baby blanket gets a lot of use in everyday life. Therefore, it's practical if the yarn is easy to clean.
Always check the care instructions for the respective wool before purchasing. Many modern yarns can be machine-washed on a wool or delicate cycle.
Ultimately, it's not so much a specific fibre that's decisive, but rather the combination of softness, ease of care, skin-friendliness, and minimal shedding.
Baby Blanket: Free Knitting Pattern
Want to get started right away? For a simple baby blanket, you don't need complicated instructions.
You can adapt these basic instructions to your desired yarn and size.
What you'll need
- soft, baby-friendly yarn
- knitting needles appropriate for the yarn recommendation
- measuring tape
- tapestry needle for seaming
- your gauge swatch
1. Determine the size
First, consider how large you want your baby blanket to be. For a versatile blanket, for example, you can plan for approximately 80 × 80 cm.
2. Knit a gauge swatch
A gauge swatch is important because the number of stitches required can vary significantly depending on the yarn, needle size, and your personal knitting style.
Once you know how many stitches make 10 cm for you, you can easily calculate the number of stitches required:
Number of stitches for 10 cm × desired width in cm ÷ 10
Example: If 20 stitches in your gauge swatch result in 10 cm and the blanket should be 80 cm wide, you will need:
20 × 80 ÷ 10 = 160 stitches
3. Cast on stitches
Cast on the calculated number of stitches.
For a very simple baby blanket, you can now knit in garter stitch, working every row with knit stitches.
If you want to knit in stockinette stitch, you will knit the right-side rows and purl the wrong-side rows.
4. Create a nice border
To prevent the edges of your baby blanket from curling, you can plan for a simple garter stitch border all around.
For example, knit the first and last five to eight stitches of each row. At the beginning and end of the blanket, also work a few rows in garter stitch.
This will automatically create a simple border.
5. Knit until desired length
Continue knitting your pattern until the baby blanket has reached the desired length. Measure with a tape measure in between – the pure number of rows is less informative as it depends on the yarn and gauge.
6. Bind off stitches and weave in ends
Bind off all stitches loosely and carefully weave in the yarn ends.
Depending on the yarn, you can then carefully wash the finished blanket and dry it flat in shape. Always observe the care instructions on the yarn label.
Your self-knitted baby blanket is ready!
A baby blanket as a personalized gift
A handmade baby blanket is a wonderful gift for a new baby – and with a few small details, it becomes even more personal.
For example, you can:
incorporate the parents' favorite colors
combine several shades
knit in small hearts or other motifs
integrate the baby's initials
create a contrasting border
The blanket doesn't even have to be elaborate. Often, it's the simple designs where color, yarn, and a small personal touch truly shine.
And ultimately, every single stitch contains something that money can't buy: the time you dedicated to a new little human.
